VIKTORIA PARANYUK

I am a film scholar, freelance programer, and video
essayist, specializing in the cinemas and visual cultures
of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

My book, Cinema of Sincerity: Soviet Films and Culture
(U of Wisconsin Press, 2025), explores what I call
sincerity aesthetics and informal circulation of ideas
in the cinemas of the post-Stalin years.

My current research focuses on the junction of history,
historical violence, embodiment, and autobiography
in the work of women filmmakers from socialist Europe.

My research has been published in Film History,
[in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film &
Moving Image Studies, ASAP/Review, Slavic Review,
Tecmerin, and in edited collections, such as
ReFocus: The Films of Larisa Shepitko.
